The Quranic lexicon considers,

ilah إلاه

rabb  ربّ

din دين

ibadah عبادة

its four primary themes – the foundational importance to human life; its entire focus of the Quran is on Allah’s centrality as God and Lord, Who is Peerless, with none to part His divinity and providence. Consistent with the emphasis on Allah’s centrality, the Quran asks humanity to give up everyone else and accept Allah alone as divine and providential. In this way, our entire lives fall within His realm of authority and to the exclusion of all else.

21:25

Not a messenger did We send before you without this inspiration sent by Us to him: that there is no god but I; therefore worship and serve Me.

9:31

They take their priests and their anchorites to be their lords in derogation of Allah, and (they take as their god) Christ, the son of Mary; yet they were commanded to worship but One God: there is no god but He. Praise and glory to Him: (far is He) from having the partners they associate (with Him)

21:92

Verily, this brotherhood of yours is a singular brotherhood, and I am your Lord and Cherisher: therefore serve Me (and no other).

6:164

Say: Shall I seek for (my) Cherisher other than Allah, when He is the Cherisher of all things (that exist)? Every soul draws the meed of its acts on none but itself: no bearer of burdens can bear the burden of another. Your goal in the end is towards Allah: He will tell you the truth of the things wherein you disputed.

18:110

Say: I am but a man like yourselves, (but) the inspiration has come to me, that your God is one God: whoever expects to meet his Lord, let him work righteousness, and, in the worship of his Lord, admit no one as partner.

16:36

For We assuredly sent amongst every people a messenger, (with the Command), Serve Allah and eschew evil: of the people were some whom Allah guided, and some on whom error became inevitably (established). So travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those who denied (the Truth).

3:51

It is Allah Who is my Lord and your Lord; then worship Him. This is a Way that is truthful.

3:83

Do they seek for other than the Religion of Allah? – while all creatures in the heavens and on earth here, willing or unwilling, bowed to His Will (accepted Islam), and to Him shall they all be brought back.

These verses are examples.

All who care to read the Quran may validate such thesis that its entire discourse revolves around these four primary themes reinforcing the centrality of the following concepts:

Allah is the God and Provider.

Divinity and providence belong to Allah alone.

He alone should be worshipped.

The religion should be for Allah alone in intent and spirit.

In other words, private as well as public spheres should fall under Allah’s jurisdiction.

This being the case, it is essential to grasp the instructional THRUST of the Quran. For if a person is neither familiar with the meaning of expressions like God and Lord, nor with the notion of Worship and Religion, the Quran will withhold its meanings from him. In consequence, he will fail to grasp the concept of Oneness and its adversarial concept, Polytheistic Disbelief. With such a large failing, this person cannot surrender his affairs to Allah for guidance. Likewise, if for any reason these themes remain imprecise and obscure for readers, the Quran will refuse to unfold its meaning to them. In this case even though someone may proclaim their belief in the Quran, such belief and practice will be insufficient.

For instance, he may continue saying there is none but Allah – and still elevate a multitude of people and philosophies to divinity. He may also continue saying there is no master other than Allah but ascribe divinity to others as well. Again, he may say with sincerity that he worships Allah, and even then, continue worshipping a multitude of gods. He makes a proclamation of being in Allah’s Religion, even though he allows other yokes around his neck. He may also never use the epithets of God and Lord for others, but in the matrix of these primary concepts, he still appoints to himself many Gods and Lords. In short, the poor soul may not have the slightest idea that he ascribes divinity and providence to humans and their manufactured icons.

Should you tell him that he is worshipping objects other than Allah and that as such, he is guilty of polytheism, he may attempt on your life. Yet for sure in the parlance of worship and Religion, he is not Allah’s but somebody else’s worshipper and so is his Religion.

Before the Quran descended upon Arabia, by and large people knew the phrasal implications of God and Lord for these words were then in currency. As such, when people were told that Allah alone was their God and Lord, that no one else parted His divinity or providence, then they got the drift of the message knowing well the inviolable nature of Allah’s domain and its exclusivity. Those who opposed the call knew the implications of their refusal while those who accepted the call knew what they had to discard in their embrace of the new message. Likewise, their vocabulary carried expressions like Worship and Religion. They knew what –Servant– entailed; what made –Servitude– what attitudes were constitutive of –Worship– and what it was that –Religion– stood for. Thus when they were asked to worship none but Allah and stay away from all other forms of worship, they understood the Quranic call. They knew the change it sought to bring about in their lives.

In later times, however, these words suffered from corruption and a change in meaning, which not only diluted their wider expression but also restricted them to a particular nuance. This can be attributed to declining standards in pure Arabic tastes and sensibilities. With changing times, linguistic and exegetic literature carried meanings understood by present-day Muslims. For example, the phrase –God– approximated the meaning of idols and gods. –Lord– stood for provider and sustainer. –Worship– was translated into ritualistic worship. –Religion– became equivalent of religion and –Purpose of Life– was transmuted into an idol. That this made the Quranic intent obscure and difficult to understand soon became obvious.

The Quran says do not elevate others to the status of God.

In return, people say -we have discarded idols and gods in compliance with the Quranic intent-

though they follow what falls within the purview of God.

The Quran also says do not accept anyone else as Lord.

In return, people say -for sure we have grasped the meaning of Oneness in our lives as we do not accept anyone other than Allah as our provider and sustainer-

though they negate whatever the concept of Lord entails by giving others the status of Lord.

Likewise, the Quran asks its readers to give up –Taghut– and worship Allah alone.

In return, they emphatically say -we do not worship idols; we curse Cain and we submit ourselves to Allah-

Yet the fact is that other than giving up stone-crafted images, they are still involved with Taghut.

And other than ritualistic worship, the object of their devotion remains anything but Allah. The same goes for Religion, which they have taken for a formal acceptance of a religion named Islam -what else do you want from us- they say -when we do not proclaim ourselves as unbelievers?-

Thus anyone who is a Muslim by definition thinks his Religion is for Allah alone, though in the exhaustive sense of the phrase Religion, the majority of Muslims still lack purity in their commitment to Islam.

Whether we like it or not, because the meanings of these four foundational themes are veiled more than three-fourths of the Quranic teachings – rather, its real spirit – has gone obscured, resulting in obvious flaws in people’s beliefs and practices. To highlight the Quranic NEXUS and elaborate its real intent, it is important that these primary concepts are fully explained. I have tried in a number of previous essays to inform people of their meanings but perhaps this has not been enough to dispel misunderstandings. Nor does it seem to have satisfied readers, for without citing the lexicon and the Quranic verses in support, people take these extrapolations as subjective. Nor can such an opinion invite respect especially from those who disagree. The effort, therefore, is to explain these four primary concepts fully and also avoid saying something that has no supporting evidence from the lexicon and the Quran.

Worldview

To understand the polity the Quran creates, it is meaningful to reflect on how it visualizes the universe from the perspective of political philosophy. This should give us the following points:

Allah the Exalted is the Creator of the entire universe including humans and the natural resources humans make us of in this world.

6:73

And He it is who has created the heavens and the earth in truth.

13:16

Say: Allah is the creator of everything. He is the One, the Irresistible.

4:1

People! Fear your Lord Who created you from a single being and out of it created its pair; and out of the two spread many men and women. Fear Allah in Whose name you plead for rights, and heed the ties of kinship. Surely, Allah is ever watchful over you.

2:29

It is He who has created for you all that is on earth.

35:3

Is there any Creator, apart from Allah, Who provides your sustenance out of the heavens and earth?

56:58-72

Did you ever consider the fluid that you emit?

Do you create a child out of it, or are We its Creators?

It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated.

Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about.

You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it?

Have you considered the seeds you till?

Is it you or We Who makes them grow?

If We so wished, We could have reduced your

harvest to rubble, and you would have been

left wonder-struck to exclaim: We have been

penalised; nay; we have been undone!

Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink?

Is it you who brought it down from the clouds

or is it We Who brought it down?

If We had so pleased, We could have made it

bitter. So why do you not give thanks?

Did you consider the fire that you kindle?

Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who

made it grow?

Allah is the Creator of His Creation,

Sovereign and the Controller

20:6

To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth, and all that is in between, and all beneath the soil.

30:26

To Him belongs all who are in the heavens and all who are on the earth: All are in obedience to Him.

7:54

Who created the sun, and the moon, and the stars, making them all subservient to His command? Lo! His is the creation and His is the command. Blessed is Allah, the Lord of the entire Universe.

32:5

He governs from the heavens to the earth.

To none but Allah belongs the sovereignty of this universe;

there is none to part His powers.

2:107

Are you not aware that the dominion of the heavens and the earth belongs to Allah?

25:2

Nor has taken any partner in His kingdom.

28:70

His is the Praise in this world and in the Hereafter. His is the Command and to Him will all of you be returned.

6:57

Judgement is with Allah alone.

18:26

The creatures have no other guardian than Him; He allows none to part His authority.

3:154

Tell them: Truly, all power of decision rests solely with Allah.

30:4

All power belongs to Allah both before and after.

57:5

His is the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and to Him are all matters referred (for judgement).

16:17

Is then the One Who creates like one who does not create? Will you not, then, take heed?

13:16

Then have those whom they associate with Allah in His Divinity ever created anything like Allah did?

35:40-41

Say to them (Prophet): Have you ever seen those of your associates upon whom you call apart from Allah? Show me, what have they created in the earth? Or do they have any partnership (with Allah) in the heavens? Or have We given them a Book so that they have a clear proof (for associating others with Allah in His Divinity)? Nay, what these wrongdoers promise each other is nothing but delusion. Surely Allah holds the heavens and the earth, lest they should be displaced there, for if they were displaced none would be able to hold them after Him. Surely, He is Most Forbearing, Most Forgiving.

All attributes of sovereignty and powers are vested in Allah;

there is none to part them in this universe:

He alone overpowers everything.

Free from deficiency end error, He is conscious of every moment.

None can dare go out of His dominion and control;

cause and consequence flow from Him;

none but He can cause hurt or give profit.

Without His authorisation – nothing happens.

Nor anyone without His permission can plead for any person.

He can punish and forgive anyone.

He is answerable to no one.

His decree is unstoppable; nobody can ward it off.

All these attributes of power are His alone.

6:18

He has the supreme hold over His servants. He is All-Wise, All-Aware.

13:9

He knows both what is hidden and what is manifest. He is the Supreme One, the Most High.

59:23

He: the Kind, the Holy, the All-Peace, the Giver of security, the Overseer, the Most Mighty, the Overpowering.

2:255

(Allah) Ever-Living, the Self-subsisting by Whom all subsist, there is no god but He. Neither slumber seizes Him, nor sleep; to Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. Who is there who might intercede with Him save with His leave? He knows what lies before them and what is hidden from them.

67:1

Blessed is He in whose Hand is the dominion of the Universe, and Who has power over everything.

36:83

Holy is He Who has full control over everything, and to Him you shall all be recalled.

3:83

All that is in the heavens and the earth is in submission to Him – willingly or unwilling.

10:65

Indeed all honour is Allah’s He is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

48:11

Say to them: Who can be of any avail to you against Allah if He should intend to cause you any harm or confer upon you any benefit?

10:107

If Allah afflicts you with any hardship, none other than He can remove it; and if He wills any good for you none can aver His Sustenance. He bestows good upon whomsoever of His servants He wills. He is All-Forgiving, All-Merciful.

2:284

Whether you disclose whatever is in your hearts or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it and will then forgive whomsoever He wills, and chastise whomsoever He wills. Allah has power over everything.

18:26

How well He sees; how well He hears! The creatures have no other guardian than Him; He allows none to share His authority.

72:22

Say: None can protect me from Allah, nor can I find a refuge apart from Him.

23:88

(who is it) that grants refuge, but against Whom no refuge is available?

85:13-16

He it is Who creates for the first time and He it is Who will create against, and He is the Ever-Forgiving, the Most Loving – The Lord of the Glorious Throne, the Executor of what He wills.

5:1

Indeed, Allah decrees as He wills.

13:41

Allah judges and no one has the power to reverse His judgement.

21:23

None shall question Him about what He does, but they shall be questioned.

18:27

For none may change His words (and were you to make any change in His words) you will find no refuge from Him.

95:8

Is not Allah the Greatest of all sovereign?

3:26

Say: Allah, Lord of all dominion! You bestow dominion on whomever You please, and take away dominion from whomever You please, and You exalt whom You please, and abase whom You please, In Your Hands is all good, Surely, You are All-Powerful.

7:128

The Earth is Allah’s, He inherits it on those of His servants He chooses.
