Hazrat Sahl bin Sa’ad states that on the day of Khaibar the Holy Prophet ﷺ said:
“Tomorrow I shall give the flag in the hand of such a person in whose hand Almighty Allaah will give success and victory and he loves Almighty Allaah and His Prophet .”
The following morning all the Sahaba presented themselves in the court of the Holy Prophet ﷺ and each one wished that the flag would be given to him but the Holy Prophet ﷺ said:
”Where is Ali ibn Abi Talib?’
The Sahaba said:
“His eyes are hurting. (had an eye infection)”
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Ask for someone to call him!”
Someone was sent to call Hazrat Ali. When he arrived, the Holy Prophet ﷺ put his saliva into his eyes and Hazrat Ali became well and he felt as if there never was any pain (in his eyes).

Salamah ibn Al-Akwa reported: Ali remained behind the Prophet
during the battle of Khaybar as he was suffering from a sore eye. Ali
said:
“How can I stay behind the Messenger of Allah?”
He set out until he joined the Prophet .
On the eve of the liberation of Khaybar, the Messenger of Allah said:
“I will give the flag to a man whom Allah and His Messenger love. Allah will grant him victory.”
Then Ali joined us although we were not expecting him.
The people said:
“Here is Ali.”
The Messenger of Allah gave him the flag and Allah granted him victory.

“When Ali reached the Citadel of Qamus, he was met at the gate by Marhab, a Jewish chieftain who was well experienced in battle. Marhab called out: „Khaybar knows well that I am Marhab, whose weapon is sharp, a warrior tested. Sometimes I thrust with spear; sometimes I strike with sword, when lions advance in burning rage”.
In Sahih Muslim, the verses have been narrated like this: „Khaibar knows certainly that I am Marhab, A fully armed and well-tried valorous warrior (hero), when war comes spreading its flames”.
Ali chanted in reply:
„I am the one whose mother named him Haidar (lion), (And am) like a lion of the forest with a terror-striking countenance. I give my opponents the measure of sandara in exchange for sa’ (goblet) (i. e. return their attack with one that is much more fierce)”.
The two champions struck at each other, and after the second blow, Ali cleaved through Marhab’s helmet, splitting his skull and landing his sword in his opponent’s teeth.
Another narration described, „Ali struck at the head of Mirhab and killed him”.
